Key Volume Indicator (KVI)....A Key Volume Indicator (KVI) is a generic term used to identify work completed in a department. KVI are typically captured automatically off the billing systems for each cost center. KVI’s are a key element in calculating productivity. KVI’s are used in several ways based on the amount of detail that is available. KVI's are used to determine:
A KVI in a nursing unit, for example, would be a patient day. Dietary would be meals, the cath lab would be procedures. A clear understanding of how KVI’s are used in productivity is needed because all KVI’s are not the same. KVI Source Information For most revenue producing cost centers the Charge Description Master (CDM) is key to capturing KVI's. The charge master is reviewed by management and items requiring “work” are designated. “Facility” CPT codes also indicate which primary procedures a cost center should count as KVI’s in the IMS system. Time standards are developed for the designated CDM items. Thus multiplying the volume by the time standard yields the total direct required hours of staff required. Non revenue producing cost centers can manually enter their KVI into the system via the Transmittal screen. |
